ABOUT AGNES E. WELLS QUADRANGLE

69_1280.jpg

Agnes E. Wells Quadrangle, simply known as Wells Quad, is a residence center at Indiana University Bloomington. Wells Quad is comprised of Memorial Hall, known for its iconic arch and turrets, and Goodbody Hall. Originally dedicated in 1925, Memorial Hall was built as the first women's residence hall on campus. Through the nearly 100 years that the quad has existed, the buildings were renovated to serve as offices for various departments such as interior design, history, and philosophy of science and medicine.

100 YEARS OF HISTORY

For a majority of its time, Wells Quad served as offices and academic space. In 2017, Memorial Hall and Goodbody Hall were converted back to student housing. The $30 million

renovation created 182 beds and a 200 seat dining hall (Indiana University Broadcast, 2017). While extensive updates were completed inside, the outside of Wells Quad remains true to its origins.

Today, Wells Quad is one of the residence hall options available to new and returning students at Indiana University Bloomington. Wells Quad is located in the Southeast residential neighborhood and is classified as "enhanced" housing. The office of Residence Life describes enhanced housing as, "...the lap of luxury!" THE SOUTHEAST NEIGHBORHOOD

The Southeast Residential neighborhood consists of five residence centers (from East to West): Willkie Quadrangle, Spruce Hall, Forest Quadrangle, Read Hall, and Wells Quadrangle. Amenities in the Southeast neighborhood include the Forest Dining Hall, Read Hall Eatery, the Jacobs School of Music, the School of Education, bus stops, sports courts, and parking. Traditionally, the Southeast neighborhood is known to be less lively than other neighborhoods because of its proximity to places like the Musical Arts Center and science buildings.

Wells Quadrangle consists of four buildings (clockwise starting North): Morrison Hall, Sycamore Hall, Memorial Hall, and Goodbody Hall. During the 2017 renovation, Memorial and Goodbody Halls were chosen to be renovated back to student housing while Morrison and Sycamore Halls remained as offices. Wells Quad is known for its proximity to academic buildings, such as the Jordan Greenhouse, Ballantine hall, and the Simon Music Center and Music Building Annex.
